SOUTH AUSTRALIA – THE PLACE TO BE

This sounds like a typical tourist attraction slogan but it is far from it. Most people may wonder what South Australia has to offer except beautiful beaches and world winning wines, well let me tell you that South Australia is one of the main attractions for some pretty serious entrepreneurs. Not convinced yet? Lets have a look at Dawna Jarvis, Writer, Mentor & Business owner, amazing collection of what’s happing right now in SA.

As the 13th largest economy in the world, Australia has always been an attractive place for business and commerce. Smart entrepreneurs are starting to head down under to enjoy a culture ripe for innovation. Adelaide, the capital of South Australia is emerging rapidly into a hot spot for entrepreneurs, innovators and investors.

Adelaide – Australia’s first gigabit city. SA’s Chief Adviser on Innovation, Tom Hajdu informs us that in an Australian first partnership between the Government of SA and Adelaide’s three world-class universities, 200km of dark fibre has been laid to create a high-speed broadband backbone across the city, in university campuses and 14 strategic business innovation precincts. Adelaide has now built the essential infrastructure for success in the digital economy. In 2016, Adelaide enhanced its competitive advantage by becoming the first city outside the US to join the US Ignite Smart Gigabit Communities network of cities, which includes Adelaide’s sister city, Austin, Texas.

The 5th most liveable city in the world. The Economist Intelligence Unit voted Adelaide to be the 5th most liveable city in the world the last five years in a row. Adelaide is the only capital city in Australia, and one of only six places in the world, to have a Mediterranean climate. It has Australia’s best wine regions and its fresh produce and multi-cultural food and culture are amazing.

World-class universities, research and technology commercialisation expertise. The Future Institute, established by the University of SA in 2015 brings together 3 top research institutes which covers four main strands: energy and advanced manufacturing; minerals and resource engineering; environmental science and engineering; and bioengineering and nanomedicine. In an Australian first, Adelaide business Availer, led by entrepreneurs based in New York and Adelaide, is leading a program known as the South Australian Rapid Commercialisation initiative. The goal of the program is to rapidly bring out a wide variety of portfolios of technologies from SA universities and research institutes, into new technology companies founded in Adelaide that have a global focus from day one.

Biotech Leader. South Australia is also home to a rapidly growing AUS$3.6 billion health and science innovation precinct, known as the Adelaide BioMed City, where the groundbreaking ‘South Australian Health Medical Research’ Institute (SAHMR) and the new Royal Adelaide Hospital are based.

Defence Industry and Aerospace. Adelaide is the centre of Australia’s multi-billion-dollar defence industry. During the next decade, the Federal Government of Australia will invest billions in new defence spending, which will include a new fleet of submarines, to be mainly build in Adelaide, as well as the construction of numerous new frigates and offshore patrol vessels. There is also a fast growing aerospace sector in South Australia. The most advanced space rocket range in Australia is situated there and new aerospace technology companies like Fleet are forging a path that is seeing world leading nano-satellite technology being developed in Adelaide to ensue global connectivity for the internet.

Renewable energy leader. South Australia is also the leading State in Australia for renewable energy. More than 50% of the State’s energy is supplied by renewable energy, which has led to a wave of investment in the State, as well as recent international interest in South Australia as a test bed for the development of world leading renewable energy technology, most notably from Elon Musk and Atlassian co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes. Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has promised of more investment in South Australia after his Tesla company won the State Government’s render to install the world’s largest lithium ion battery. The deal involves a grid-connected battery to provide both stability for renewable energy and emergency back-up at times of shortage. The battery will be connected to French company Neoen’s Hornsdale Wind Farm in the State’s mid north. Like with every giant project, there will be some significant economic spin-offs. South Australian customers will be the first to benefit from this technology. Elon Musk made his first fortune as cofounder of online payment company PayPal, before founding Tesla and SpaceX. Tesla made its name with electric cars, and has expanded into renewable energy, including batteries and solar roof tiles. SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches rockets and spacecraft.

South Australia – the place to be, is not a tourist attraction slogan, but for sure a main attraction for serious entrepreneurs. The government is helping to accelerate South Australia’s transformation. What was once an agricultural and traditional manufacturing economy is fast becoming a modern, innovative economy that supports and creates the jobs of the future. Why not enjoy such an amazing future with a glass of wine at one of South Australia’s beautiful beaches?
